Many people are surprised to learn just how important the Office of Town Clerk is to the daily operation of local government. Although much of the work happens behind the scenes, nearly every resident will interact with the Town Clerk’s Office at some point in their lives.
The Town Clerk serves as the official keeper of the town’s public records. This includes maintaining local laws, resolutions, contracts, meeting minutes, licenses, permits, historical documents, and many other official records that help preserve the history of the community and ensure transparency in government.
The office also issues marriage licenses, dog licenses, hunting and fishing licenses where applicable, parking permits, and a variety of other documents required under New York State law. Residents frequently visit the office to obtain copies of records, ask questions about town government, or receive assistance with municipal services.
Another important responsibility is supporting the Town Board. The Town Clerk prepares meeting agendas, records official minutes, maintains legal documents, publishes public notices, and helps ensure that government actions are accurately documented according to state law.
While the Town Clerk does not vote on legislation or determine zoning decisions, the office plays an essential role in making sure government operates openly, records remain accurate, and residents have access to the information they need.
Rosemary believes the Town Clerk’s Office should not simply preserve records. It should serve people. Every resident deserves friendly service, timely assistance, and confidence that their local government is working honestly and efficiently on their behalf.
